Hi I'm Anna Kogan, a postpartum nurse and a lactation consultant. In this video I'm going to explain the importance of the right flange size regarding the use of a breast pump.
Most of the women who start their pumping journey don't fit for the standard flange size (24 or 25 mm) that comes with the pump. You should always find the right size for you, because it effects your whole pumping journey: the total milk output you have in a session and the feeling of comfort during the pumping session.
There are different types of flanges on the market available to use: hard once and silicone ones. There are also inserts you can put inside your flange to change and adjust the size to your needs.
Each company has its own sizing and flanges so you need to know the size of your nipple and search for the right fit.
Here are some great options for different flanges and inserts you can find on Amazon:
1. Silicone flange - https://amzn.to/4ayQFaD
2. Hard flange for spectra that can be taken apart - https://amzn.to/3TUeMJH
3. BeauGen cushion you can insert into your flange, a great solution for elastic nipples - https://amzn.to/43VIm5Y
4. A sizing kit with inserts and a ruler to figure your nipple size at home - https://amzn.to/4ayQNqD
Sizing is really important. If you use a small flange you can damage your nipple, a big flange can effect the areola area and there can be edema after pumping. Pumping should never hurt nor breastfeeding.
