Vasuki Indikus, the largest snake in the world, is named after the Indian mythological snake king Vasuki, the son of Kashyapa and Kadru, and the grandson of Brahma, the creator of the universe. associated with the Hindu deity Lord Shiva, is an ancient giant snake species discovered in a lignite mine in Kutch, Gujarat, India. Estimated to have lived 47 million years ago, this prehistoric serpent is believed to be one of the largest snakes to have ever existed. The fossilized remains include 27 vertebrae, with the largest being about 11cm wide.
Scientists estimate Vasuki Indikus could have reached lengths of up to 15 meters, rivaling the size of the previously known largest snake, Titanoboa. Unlike its venomous modern relatives, Vasuki Indikus was likely non-venomous, resembling a large python and killing its prey through constriction. It thrived in the warm, swampy environments of the Indian subcontinent during a period when global temperatures were higher than today.
