Parathyroid hormone, also known as parathyroid hormone, PTH, or parathyrin, is a peptide hormone secreted by the parathyroid gland that is involved in regulating calcium and phosphorus metabolism. Parathyroid hormone is a hormone that causes hypercalcemia (an increase in blood calcium concentration) if its secretion is increased; on the other hand, a deficiency causes hypocalcemia (low blood calcium levels) and, as a consequence, can induce tetany.
