Speaking at a meeting in Esenyurt, Ekrem İmamoğlu said, "You couldn't bend this arm in the elections; you won't be able to bend it one inch with bans and trustees."
Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu spoke at a meeting held in Esenyurt's Cumhuriyet Square at the invitation of the CHP following the arrest of Esenyurt Mayor Ahmet Özer and the appointment of trustees to the municipality.
Highlights from İmamoğlu's speech are as follows:
"My dear friends, my dear fellow citizens, my beautiful neighbors, my dear fellow citizens of Esenyurt, whom I have lived with for years, for over 30 years, I greet you all with love and respect. These squares should not be filled like this. The way these squares are filled today, the way we come together, is truly saddening. But it is a struggle for justice. Today, we have the beautiful people of Esenyurt here, the mix of our country. From the east, west, south, north, the Black Sea, the east, the southeast, and Central Anatolia. Turks, Kurds, Alevis, Sunnis are all here. Esenyurt is not just a district of 1 million; it is also a big heart."
THEY ENTRUSTED ESENYURT TO THE TRUSTEE: Unfortunately, every day we find ourselves in the midst of another dubious process. We face a government pursuing yet another shady move. Now they're plotting a dirty game against Esenyurt. They declared our Mayor Ahmet Özer, a scientist I've known for many years, a professor raised in this country, elected with the participation and overwhelming support of all of Esenyurt, a terrorist on trumped-up grounds, arrested him, and entrusted Esenyurt to a trustee. Look, I just said it. Since March 31st, 2019, when we were elected, haven't they always pursued the same practices, always seeking to regain their losses at the ballot box through the judiciary? And that's exactly what they're doing today. They want to access the authority the people didn't grant them through politically motivated courts. They want to pressure the people now so they can win the next election and dominate them. But you won't be able to do it.
They will be crushed by these shameful practices they're carrying out under the guise of law. Look, they're devouring lies, slander, and fabrication like food. Let me tell you a little about the slanders leveled at Mayor Ahmet Özer and the reasons for his arrest. Logically, it's unthinkable. What is the evidence presented as evidence of the alleged link between our President Ahmet Özer and a terrorist organization? Believe me, you'll laugh if you read it. I looked at the allegations and immediately reached for them. I read the seven-page indictment in 10 minutes that evening. I apologize to our legal experts; whoever wrote that indictment needs to see a psychiatrist immediately. It's incomprehensible, illogical, and devoid of reality.
For example, the prosecutor's office says, "What is it, sir? There's what they describe as the most important phone call demonstrating his connection to a terrorist organization. He's offering his condolences to a citizen named Mehmet Kaya on his mother's funeral. What kind of mindset is it to take a statement made to ease the pain of a citizen out of context and then establish a connection to a terrorist organization? I can't understand how anyone can even think this way.
Let's never give up. They will want conflict, polarization, conflict, and chaos. They will not consider the peace of the country or the well-being of its citizens. They will not want even a single day to develop in peace, not even a smile and a good morning. But we will not give in to this. I will deal with you. I say it clearly.
