Amos Elkana | Que sais-je? (2023)
Recorded live on April 18th 2023 at the concert hall of the Voxman Music Building at Iowa State University by the Meitar Esemble led by Pierre-Andre Valade.
This work is about a man. Or better yet, memories of that man. This man was my father. During his lifetime my father was interviewed many times about his life, work and ideas. In this work I use recordings of him remembering things that happened to him. Some are dreadful memories as a holocaust survivor. Some are happy memories as a happily married father of four living an interesting and successful life. Memory was a central theme in his life and his ideas. The most influential article he has written which caused, and still does, a lot of stir was called “The need to forget” where he challenges the conventional ways the holocaust is remembered and politicized bringing forth very strong arguments in favor of forgetting. But first and foremost, being an artist myself, this is a work of art. It is a music composition that represents my style as a composer and sums up more than 30 years of making music. It uses an ensemble of 6 musicians playing traditional instruments alongside an electronic track being transmitted over multiple speakers that surround the audience. There is also a video projection that adds to and comments on the music and the subject.
