German U-Boat U-864 and British submarine HMS Venturer engaged in the sole known incident of submarine-to-submarine warfare during WWII. After returning to Norway for repairs owing to engine issues, U-864 accidentally established a course for an encounter with the Venturer on February 9th, 1945. The submarine was on a clandestine mission to assist Japan with superior technology and resources. The British Navy knew about the U-boat and sent the Venturer to hunt the German submarine. On February 9th. James S. Launders, the captain of the HMS Venturer, used sophisticated strategies and hydrophone monitoring to launch a pinpoint torpedo attack, destroying U-864 submerged beneath the waves. In 2017, the Norwegian authorities entombed the wreckage of U-864 to prevent further environmental damage. The ship had been leaking hazardous mercury.
