From the Junior Dev track at DDD Melbourne 2019!

I’ve always been interested in learning to code, but initially took a different path in life. I loved learning Latin and, by a quirk of fate, ended up teaching it in a Victorian high school. As much as I enjoyed teaching, it turned out it was not for me and I looked for something else. I found programming and all the possibilities within. I was excited by the rich panoply of options, but felt sad that I’d ‘wasted’ so much time, why did I study Virgil and Horace instead of Python and C?

But the more I learned to code, the more I realised Latin was helping me. Latin helped me learn SQL and it made ‘if, else, unless and conditionals’ easier to understand. The way Latin is taught now makes it a good springboard for learning to code and even Latin poetry can make your code better.
