Before 'Orange is the New Black' there was Women Behind Bars. I directed this famous cult play way back in 1991. The trick to the play is to honour those cheap B movie roots but nail the acting, I think we did it! The show had an incredible cast of fabulous women and a couple of great guys too, plus nude scenes, foul language and general debauchery. At one point the Queeensland police arrived at the theatre before a perfromance and threatened to close the show down. The full frontal nudity really disturbed them. I remember the entire cast hurling abuse in character at the QLD police force (who thankfully were outside in the foyer and not in the dressing room, so they didn't hear them) Finally a compromise was made, and the company agree to post signage up everywhere in the Metro Arts Theatre warning the audience of...full frontal male nudity, rape scenes, bad language and group masturbation. We agreed to the demands of the police and the show went on, playing to full (cheering) houses the entire run. Seems Queensland audiences weren't so conservative after all. I hope you enjoy this clip. Cheers Noel
