The Perseverance Rover - What's It Doing on Mars?
Perseverance is a car-sized Mars rover designed to explore the Jezero Crater, an ancient lakebed that scientists believe may have once been habitable. It landed on the Red Planet on February 18, 2021.
Perseverance's mission is to search for signs of ancient life on Mars. To do this, it is equipped with advanced instruments.
It includes the Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment (MOXIE), which aims to produce oxygen from the Martian atmosphere, and the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter, a small helicopter designed to test powered flight in the thin Martian atmosphere.
It is also equipped with a drill that can collect samples of rock and regolith from the Martian surface. These samples will be stored in sealed tubes and left on the surface of Mars for future retrieval missions.
Perseverance will test the Mars Environmental Dynamics Analyzer (MEDA) to gather weather data for future human missions.
It is a significant step forward in our understanding of Mars and is paving the way for future human missions to the Red Planet.
