Teachers often use icebreaker activities at the beginning of a course for the purpose of facilitating student engagement, but many such activities (e.g., "name games") are superficial or mundane, prompting student apathy rather than participation. Dr. Dylan Selterman will discuss an icebreaker activity that is supported by scientific research, empirically shown to increase social bonding even between strangers. The talk will also include an activity to help demonstrate how and why this procedure works.
