Options trading is a relatively low-cost way of speculating on future movements of a stocks value. Using data from the options markets may provide more information about stocks and how investors are projecting their future movements. The action in the options market is significant, as options are used by a lot of insiders, investors, and investment bankers.

Trading options by volume presumes the trading activity is done by knowledgeable stock traders. Low trading volume in options indicates the options market is not active in the specific asset, which may be a neutral signal. For instance, similar volumes of puts and calls at the same prices and expiration dates could indicate volatility-hedging bets, whereas selling calls might indicate long-term investors are covering their positions by selling calls - a bearish signal.

This example illustrates how unusual options activity needs to be used in conjunction with other indicators to figure out whether the transactions are bets on a stocks direction, or are merely acting as hedging. This large volume of volume is sometimes benign; it may be hedges, and traders really get those bets wrong, but at times, unusual options activity indicates a large movement is coming to the underlying stock. Sometimes, looking at unusual options activity can indicate where the money is flowing, and it may predict a large move in stock prices. Unusual options activity is just the identification of particular options contracts trading a large amount of volume relative to average daily trading volumes for those contracts.

Unusual options activity involves options contracts trading a lot more volume than the average day-to-day volume. Unusual options activity is defined as the appearance of noteworthy irregular trends in an options chains order flow. The most prevalent options scanning features are Unusual Options Activity, Implicit Volatility Ranking, Options Volume, Buy-Write Search, Order-Flow Sentiment, and Open Interest Analysis. Predefined anomalous options activity scans are called options flows, which can be added as a widget, in which users can view trades, heatmap charts, options prices, strike prices, expiration dates, etc.

These could include early earnings reports, company buyouts, executives departures, etc. The traders and investors who have these unpublicized insights can use abnormal options actions to place large bets. Sometimes, we see unusual options orders hitting the tape, only to hear about a buyout proposal being announced, or some hedge fund taking a large position in a stock. Unusually large purchases of options contracts are a sign that somebody believes that an imminent event is going to move the stock significantly. When an unusual options scanner shows several orders of puts or calls at the same contract date or strike price, it may indicate a move is coming to a stock.

If there is a volume on calls accompanied by an increase in price on those calls, it indicates professional traders think the stocks price is going higher. As the share price for the call options contract moves farther out of the money, call options volume generally declines. When a higher call options volume is consistent with a rising or falling share price, this generally indicates the presence of a trend which may lay out a successful options trade. Generally, if analysts are expecting a company to post positive results, this usually matches a rise in call options volume, since more investors are looking to purchase shares.
