Teach your dog “come”!
Come when called (recall) is arguably the most important behavior you can teach your dog.
My son and I are working with Sky in the video. As you can see his recall is fast, and without hesitation.
Recall is an ongoing behavior that you should practice periodically to maintain proficiency.
The main rules of recall are:
1. Say it ONCE and make sure it happens. Achieve this by gently prompting your dog. Gently pull the leash, tap your leg or kneel down. Then reward once your dog comes to you. Do not repeat the cue!
2. NEVER say, ”come” and do something your dog doesn’t absolutely love. Examples of things not to do after calling your dog include cutting nails, giving a bath, punishment, etc. Other less obvious events that dogs don’t love include putting on a harness, going in the car, getting brushed, etc. Unless you know your dog loves those things don’t call them before.
3. Don’t always end the fun by saying, “come”. Examples include calling your dog inside from the backyard, ending a play session with another dog. Call your dog periodically, reward and then say, “go play” and let them go back to the fun. Once you want them inside, just go get them without saying, “come”.
4. Don’t over train. If you ask for too many in a row you can burn your dog out and make it not fun.
