How do you like your pull ups? Neutral grip? Pronated? Supinated? Well, honestly, try them all! When I first started lifting, I did pull ups the "traditional" way, which was with a pronated grip. And while I enjoyed improving on them, they got boring. I mean, I was happy that I was progressing on both the form and the number of reps, but eventually the same exercise just becomes less appealing.

Eventually I turned to weighted pull ups, and found those very enjoyable because they added a new challenge to my back workout routine. But I still felt something was missing. The funny thing is, all I needed to do was change the grip of my pull ups to really switch things up. Ironically, last year forced me to get creative with my arms and back routine because I didn't have access to a gym. And so I had less access to workout equipments. By changing grips alone, I was able to preferentially target muscles that I couldn't otherwise if I only worked on doing pronated-grip pull ups.

Now, of course, the pull up is a compound movement and it is phenomenal in building your back. But it also works your biceps and your forearms. And so by introducing different grips, I was able to keep myself engaged in the workout while also building my biceps and forearm strength.

My point is this: don't limit yourself. View your exercises not as a limiting factor, but rather something you can get creative in. Part of the reason I have taken such a liking to bodyweight and calisthenic training is because they force you to get creative when you lack access to the gym or weights. You need to have an understanding of the basics of biomechanics and how muscles work. Once you understand that, you would be amazing at what you can do with just a horizontal bar and your body weight.

Pull ups are a staple in my workout routine. Even though I have access to a gym now, I find myself always incorporating some type of pull up workout because I find them so versatile in their ability to hit multiple muscle groups. And by switching up the grips, I find that never get bored doing them and that I also have a better mastery with the pull up movement.

In fact, if I had just stuck with pronated grip pull ups, I feel as if I wouldn't have been able to progress as quickly as I did last year when it came to learning different calisthenic exercises. Now do you have to do pull ups? No, you don't. But try them if you are interested in growing your back and if you have an overall interest in bodyweight exercises.
