Aggie Impact: Defending Utah's crops
Agriculture is integral to Utah’s economy. Utah is predominately a desert and faces intensifying droughts each year. Utah State University’s Dr. Ricardo Ramirez leads students in research to create tools, like biopesticides, to help farmers combat destructive insects. “In the west, we are dealing with corn that is under drought stress. My lab is working on understanding pests’ development. Knowing the pests' lifecycle helps us to predict when they occur. Then we develop and test tools to manage these pests.” By defending Utah’s crops, farmers can have a more productive harvest.
