"Home" written and performed by Tobi LaCroix at Interlochen Arts Camp
LYRICS:
Teddy bears
And claw marks on leather chairs
A broken house and yet a perfect home
A little girl
Who just can’t wait to see the world
Mind filled with treasure chests and planets to roam
Five years later
It starts just like it ends
She’s losing sleep and losing friends
But fourth grade is messy for us all
She’s been thinking for a while
She cuts her hair just to make her smile
Sit back, just throw and catch the softball
And she’ll laugh through life
But when she’s alone
She’s got problems
They’ve never known
She says
“I tell them I’m fine
I tell them it’s good
But I think that I’ve got myself misunderstood
When they call me a girl
I will smile and fake joy
But I think that I might be a boy”
Summer ‘21
He asks what else he could have done
A coming out doesn’t go as planned
He tries to express himself
But refuses to get any help
His world is washed away like words in sand
At school they don’t treat him right
The kids aren’t very bright
They’ll always attack what they don’t know
To his face, they’ll call him slurs
Behind his back it’s probably worse
But he won’t cry and put on a show
And he’ll laugh through life
But when he’s alone
He wishes he could go back
To before they’d known
He says
“I tell them I’m fine
I tell them it’s good
But each place I go I’m so misunderstood
When they call me a girl
It’s so hard to fake joy
‘Cause the world can’t see that I’m a boy”
I paint my walls green so I know who I am
And I’ll cover my chest ‘till my mirror shows me
And I’d tell them the truth but they won’t understand
How I fear to walk the streets of DC
And I’ll watch my friends die as these laws are passed
Wonder if the next funeral’s for me
And I’m begging you all just to look at the facts
‘Cause I likely won’t make it past thirty
And I’ll laugh through life
But when I’m alone
I wonder if it would be easier
If I had never known
I tell them I’m fine
I tell them it’s good
But everyone has me so misunderstood
When they call me a girl
I can’t smile and fake joy
Just ‘cause the world can’t stand that I’m a boy
He’s far from teddy bears
He’s far from leather chairs
He’s got a new house now
But lost his home
