The 100 Point Scoring System (from www.robertparker.com):
96-100: An extraordinary wine of profound and complex character displaying all the attributes expected of a classic wine of its variety. Wines of this caliber are worth a special effort to find, purchase and consume.
90 - 95: An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. In short, these are terrific wines.
80 - 89: A barely above average to very good wine displaying various degrees of finesse and flavor as well as character with no noticeable flaws.
70 - 79: An average wine with little distinction except that it is soundly made. In essence, a straightforward, innocuous wine.
60 - 69: A below-average wine containing noticeable deficiencies, such as excessive acidity and/or tannin, an absence of flavor or possibly dirty aromas or flavors.
50 - 59: A wine deemed to be unacceptable.
When it is all fermented grape juice, why are people paying so much for it? That’s a justified question, one that many have asked before. That we pay much more for one product compared to another similar product is, however, nothing new. Just look at handbags or cars for instance: A Gucci bag is just another leather bag and a Ferrari will get you to work just as fast as your Honda … that is if you follow the law.
Still, humans are prepared much more for some luxury products because they represent something extraordinary and make them feel better about themselves. For this feeling you pay extra but in a blind tasting, the brand recognition of a luxury wine does not matter anymore because all wines are bottles in numbered black bags.
Leon has selected five wines that are all made from the same grape variety or varieties. They might come from different places – I don’t know… what I know though, is that one of the wines is really expensive and the rest are more moderately priced.
The question is: Will I know which one is which and will the most expensive wine win the tasting?
