05 - the canoe builder
I spent over 5 weeks with Pak Yusin as we slowly shaped the breadfruit tree into a canoe - despite his confident answer: 5 days should be enough. I spent time much of this time with him and his family in the little village of Pandanan in West Lombok. This is Yusin’s story.

For this season I’m paddling the Lesser Sunda islands (Nusa Tenggara) in south east Indonesia, starting from Lombok and going east. It’s 1500km of loosely populated islands with volcanoes and savannahs and dragons. But first I have to build the canoe in the style of a traditional indonesian sampan.
