Planning a geologist life-dream trip to backpack into the Grand Canyon ran into barriers including bureaucracy, high costs, and crowding, along with the need to win a lottery for a backcountry permit. So we pivoted to a wilderness canoe/hike trip closer to home, in the Arkansas Ozarks' Buffalo National River, which was far more relaxing and cost-effective. Follow along as we share the frustration of trying to make a Grand Canyon trip happen, and the joy resulting from exploring the fascinating geology, ecology, and history of the lower Buffalo.
