Did you know that Castel Sant'Angelo was originally built as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian? Later, in the Middle Ages, it became a fortified castle to guard over the Sant'Angelo bridge. It then served as a refuge for the Popes who created some lavishly decorated apartments in it.
Since 1925, it is home to the historical and art collections of the National Museum of Castel Sant'Angelo, including some stunning panoramic views of Rome! 😍
