For those of you that don’t know me my name is Lydia Black and I’m a 17 year old girl. When I was 11 years old I got diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome. I needed to get chemotherapy, radiation and a bone marrow transplant. I got my transplant June 19th 2015. During that time I lived at Sick Kids and the Ronald McDonald House. I got to go home for a little over a year. Then in november 2017 I got a severe complication from my transplant called Graft versus host disease. My joints locked into place, I coulndt even touch the top of my head. My skin was all blisters and tight and raw. My lungs were in very bad shape. My eyes were extremely dry and I have to put in eye drops every 10 minutes. My eyelashes grow into my eyes and need to pluck them out everyday. I was in a wheelchair unable to even touch my head. I needed help doing everything (even in the washroom). I had a central line in for treatment and from that I grew a large blood clot, if it were to let go it would block off my lungs, id stop breathing and well you know what happens if you cant breath. At this time I was staying at the Ronald McDonald House and Sick Kids. I got put on a daily needle for my GVHD and it started to work. I started to get better at being able to walk with a walker and do more day to day things. I then went home and also got my central line removed. The clot is still in my heart stable. I'm able to walk and be independent but some days my joints act up and it's hard to walk. I still use the eye drops and need to pluck out my eyelashes and go to Sick Kids often.
