Are 4K monitors Worth it? (A General Overview)
So, I recently bought a 4K monitor to help see every little pixel when video editing. And to use as it as make shift TV for my bedroom. It’s a little too early for me to review it. Butttttt, I can tell you whether having a 4K monitor is worth it or not based on my own initial impressions. Let’s get started.
So the first thing you’d noticed when jumping to a 4K monitor is the price tag. They’re expensive. Not as expensive as 4 regular full hd monitors but at least 3 of them. And that’s for the cheaper 4K monitors. But honestly, you may be better off buying those 4 monitors instead or even an ultrawide. Here’s why.
4K monitors are great but most “businessy” type people, it wouldn’t benefit them with clearer 4k images when making a word document, spreadsheets in excel, or emailing. When solely focused on “productive” tasks associated with a business you’d rather do work more efficiently than in higher resolutions. So, for these type of people it’s near pointless. Unless you’re goofing off at work watching YouTube. For gamers, based on Steam’s survey of what people have in their pcs, gamers lack the hardware required to be able to run the latest and greatest games in 4K or if they did try to run it anyway, it’d be a slideshow. But then again most of the people surveyed were in China. And most of my own viewers aren’t Chinese soooooo….. maybe that’s not a perfect indicator. The Windows 10 Operating System itself still struggles to scale high resolutions properly. But all this shows you something. 4K is still out of reach of the average gamer. It’s just not viable unless you have beefy expensive systems.
What’s the point of 4K monitors when they aren’t useful for those type of tasks then? Aren’t computers used for just business and play? Who would benefit from higher resolutions? Well, video and photo editors. It provides you the extra bits of detail you can use to perfect that amazing video or photo. I mean here’s a quick example. It lets you see everything.
But not only that, it also has plenty of uses as what people normally use their 4K TVs for… as a TV. Watching Netflix, or YouTube on a monitor like this is amazing. I mean it. Unlike a 4K TV where you sit far away, losing some clarity. You tend to sit with your eyes up against the monitor. And while using it, you can see EVERY CLEAR DETAIL. I never seen more detail on a person’s face than I do in person. Wow. It makes watching any videos on it amazing. And I mean any video. Including the more…. Dirty ones…… Yeah. You know what I’m talking about. that stuff.
So overall, is a 4K monitor worth your money? I would like to say, for most people it isn’t. Your money would be better saved or spent on different monitors or even an ultra-wide. The appeal of a 4K monitor goes more for those looking to watch or edit lots of videos as well as photo editors. Gamers would benefit more from a high refresh rate monitor than a high pixel one. In all honesty, 4K monitors seem like a niche right now. Too expensive to recommend to mainstream customers but just reachable to where you should just buy a 4K TV instead for entertainment needs, an ultra wide or dual monitors for productivity, a high refresh rate monitor for gaming, and 4k for those video/photo people. I don’t recommend splurging money on it yet just because it’s higher details. Prices are only going to drop, just like those 4K TV prices. Companies are starting to try to push 8K at us now.
