Using Niches to Find New Career Opportunities
If you're not as clear on what's next, but you know you're ready to tackle new work, new initiatives and create new professional opportunities, here are some ideas to get laser-focused on enriching your brand so that you can increase your relevance and manifest new opportunities.
I love Susan A. Friedmann’s book Riches in Niches: How to Make It Big in a Small Market. It has encouraged many people, including me, to focus on one aspect of an offering or industry. The goal is to position myself, as Susan calls it, as “an Expert in a Niche -- a sweet spot known as a "nichepreneur" -- the most surefire route to success.” Her focus is geared toward entrepreneurs, but her message and best practices are practical and effective for any professional.
This idea of niching also rings true for professionals interested in future board seats. Tracy E. Houston, M.A. is the President of Board Resources Services, LLC. Here recent e-book Board Guru™ - Final in Trilogy Becoming a Public Company Director is a great resource for professionals looking to join boards of directors. When we spoke for our video: 3 Key Strategies to Obtain a Board Seat, Tracy mentioned that “becoming an expert in a particular area within a specific industry often better positions you for future board seats.”
There are many tips I could highlight from this article above, but the one that jumped off the page for me is “You need to solve a worthy problem.” You’ll hear this from me as it relates to networking and again as we discuss market relevance. Think of yourself as a problem solver and focus on an area you can best build your skills, expertise and network to create differentiation and marketability.
