New Best VR Headset Under $300!? - Oculus Quest 2 Virtual Reality Headset First Impressions Review: This is my first impressions of the Oculus Quest 2 by Meta Facebook. At only $299 is this the best VR headset for under $300? I’ve had a few days to play around with it and feel I have enough experience to share some of my initial thoughts.
Facebook's (now Meta's) New VR headset, The Oculus Quest 2, is my first virtual reality headset excluding Google cardboard back in 2015. Going into this my VR experience was very limited and this was also my first time using motion controllers in VR. Hopefully my perspective will prove useful for anyone else just looking to get into VR for the first time. When I saw that there was a new VR headset under $300 coming out I knew I had to jump into VR. In this review I go over the Oculus Quest 2 specs which include the refresh rate, resolution, RAM, Processor, and also a test of the Oculus Quest 2's built in microphone. Here's a quick summary of the technical specifications for Facebook's new VR headset.

Is the Oculus Quest 2 Virtual Reality Headset worth it? For only $299 for the base 64GB model Facebook Meta's Oculus Quest 2 might just be the best budget virtual reality headset on the market. Not only because it's much cheaper than other options but also because the Quest 2 is currently the biggest bang for your buck spec wise too. It very well may be the the answer to those asking what is the best VR headset under $300.That said there are a few issues with the Oculus Quest 2 and I go over them in this video but here's a few:
The Oculus Quest 2 virtual reality headset has refresh rate of 90hz but at launch is currently locked to 72hz. However Oculus is expected to push an update soon to fully unlock the 90hz. Another issue with the Oculus Quest 2 is the IPD settings. With there only being 3 options many people that fall outside of them will experience blurriness. This is by far the biggest downside of the headset. Hopefully Oculus will come out with a software solution to compensate for this but until then the experience of these consumers will be lacking, It'll still be good but degraded none the less. The Quest's head strap also tends to slide around too much in fast paced games and will likely need replaced with the Oculus Elite Strap or one another 3rd party.
The Oculus Quest 2 is a standalone wireless device which means you don't need a VR ready PC to use it. But if you're like me and already have one then the Facebook Quest 2 can also be used to play PC games. Right now you do this in two ways. The first way is to use a supported USB C cable like the Official Oculus Link cable or a 3rd party equivalent. The 2nd is use a $20 3rd party program called Virtual Desktop to wirelessly stream the games from your PC to your headset. Personally I found this method to be my favorite. The latency is very low and the freedom that you gain by going wireless is worth it. In fact I originally purchased the Oculus Quest 2 for this capability. For $299 the Quest 2 seemed like a great inexpensive way to play steam VR games. And it was, but I've also been pleasantly surprised at the novelty of not needing a PC to play VR games. I shouldn't be surprised as this is the Oculus Quest 2's main purpose, but when I ordered mine I wasn't even considering how well it can act on it's own. This is a feature I've found very useful. Especially when my PC is tied up in other tasks like exporting videos for example.
This review of Facebook Meta's new Quest 2 Virtual Reality headset is only my first impressions. I'll likely be making an update Oculus Quest 2 Review video once I've had even more playtime and once I've had the ability to try out some accessories. Stay tuned for that.
