Don't repeat what you saw at home! Don't repeat it anywhere, fire isn't a toy! Especially since the smelting process creates a terrible stench throughout the area.
Today we'll be smelting iron from ore. Since blast furnace technology is used as the basis, theoretically, we should obtain cast iron. I'd like to clarify right away:
1. Cast iron is an alloy of iron and carbon, and we know this.
2. The goal was not to precisely replicate the ancient method.
3. The goal was also not to produce bloomery or any finished product.
At this stage, our goal of the experiment was to obtain iron from ore by melting the metal to a liquid state.
I emphasize that this is an experiment, not a historical reenactment. To fully reflect the historical reconstruction, instead of a vacuum cleaner, we should have used bellows powered by people, horses, or a water wheel. And, ideally, we should also have molded the bricks ourselves. But even with ready-made bricks and using low-tech equipment to pump air into the furnace, smelting the iron proved far from simple.
