Study Geology in Catania | Discover the three-year degree program in Geological Sciences (L34)
A journey through the University of Catania's programs to inform and guide future freshmen: this time, we stop at the Department of Biological, Geological, and Environmental Sciences (DSBGA) to learn more about the three-year degree program in Geological Sciences (L34).
The program prepares graduates capable of applying investigation methods and tools, both in the field and in the laboratory, to understand and monitor the "Earth System" and its evolution.
In short, it trains technicians capable of monitoring, collecting, and selecting geological data from processes occurring on the Earth's surface.
"The program," explains President Agata Di Stefano, "teaches future geologists to understand the dynamics of Planet Earth, which should not be seen as immobile, but as vital. Studying in Catania," she explains, "is an added value because there is the best relationship between students and faculty and because our students are able to have direct contact with the field from the very beginning."
The course focuses on practical exercises in classrooms equipped with microscopes, collections of minerals, rocks, fossils, topographical and geological maps, as well as field trips.
During the training program, in addition to basic knowledge of the disciplines, students will explore the subjects covering the main cultural areas of Earth Sciences: paleontology, geology-stratigraphy-structural, geology-application, mineralogy-petrography, volcanology-geochemistry, and geophysics.
Regarding career opportunities, the course prepares students for the state exam for the "Junior Geologist" qualification, focusing primarily on activities such as risk mitigation, land-use planning, cultural heritage, major construction sites, reserves, and natural parks.
