Day 101 - Yesterday, I got a taste of my old life with an hour and a half commute each way, the same distance I used to drive when I worked for the city of Ventura, California. Yesterday’s drive really wore me out, and it’s not just because I’m no longer used to it. I think it’s also my age, combined with four decades of built-up “fed up” with the workaday life. I came home yesterday completely exhausted, worn out, and mentally off my game. I even took the dogs to Julian for their evening walk and forgot their leashes (sorry, boys).

Is this how it is now because I’m sixty? Or is it because I’ve made the decision to retire and, in doing so, lost my will to work? Maybe it’s a bit of both. But mostly, I think it’s the latter. My will to work a job is gone, along with the fortitude I once had to push through the tough parts: getting up early, enduring long commutes, droning away at my desk, suffering through inane office chatter, attending endless meetings, and coming home feeling like I left the best of myself in my cubicle waste-bin to be tossed away by the evening cleaner.

It’s not that I can’t do it anymore—it’s that I’ve chosen not to. And with that decision, the will to live that life has faded away. #GoingAlone (KB)
