How do you make it easier to give instructions after your passing? If you have multiple accounts, multiple brokers accounts, insurance policies, retirement accounts, safety deposit boxes, bills, mortgages, and loans after your passing, someone will need to take care to complete your wishes in those regards. So, I recommend penning a “Letter of Instruction”.

What is a letter of instruction?

You can hand write or type these instructions regarding all your financial obligations, nest eggs, creditors, debtors in one location so that it’s easy for someone to fulfill your wishes. It is a non-legal document that is to help the executor of your estate. In this document, you can include organ donation and funeral arrangement wishes too. Be sure to update this document often and give a copy to your executor of your estate.

In your letter of instruction, include all your documents and their locations:

• Your will
• Financial accounts (statements)
• Insurance Policies
• Tax Returns
• Deeds
• Mortgage accounts
• Vehicle titles
• Medicare card
• Social security card
• Driver’s license
• Passport
• Marriage license
• Divorce decrees
• Birth certificate
• Login and passwords for your logins for online access (incl date of last change)

Also include contact information for people who will deal with your estate:
• CPA
• Attorney
• Financial Advisors
• Insurance Agents

Also include list of creditors and debtors, including next due dates & copy of statement:
• How many total payments to be made to creditors
• Amount of each payment
• Due date of payments
