Trip to Varpa and Palma Farm - History of Latvian Immigration
In this video, we will explore Varpa, a district of Tupã, a village with an incredible history of colonization from Latvia.
First, two men came to buy the land, settling on the right bank of the Rio do Peixe in November 1922,
and decided that a community would be formed there, founding the Varpa colony and the Palma Evangelical Corporation
(current Palma Farm) in the municipality of Campos Novos.
Then came the others. There were more than 2,400 Latvian immigrants creating a community in a cooperative system.
They cleared the forest, built houses with European architecture, and were self-sufficient.
During the construction, they also built Varpa's first cemetery, which we will also visit.
