For many animation rigs or setups, its common to use parenting to control the position, scale and rotation of many objects at once.
This is a great technique, but does not solve for Opacity. To fade out items that are attached to a null, you must still go in and add keyframes to each individual layer. And with a lot of layers, this can become a lot to manage.
The Solution???
Expressions of course.
Expressions are one of the most powerful tools in After Effects.
And this one could not be simpler to use.
parent.opacity;
Adding this expression to a layer will make it inherit the opacity of its parent. Voila! ----
