GATHERING INFORMATION: The University of Kent has a chart that outlines good questions and bad questions. Bad questions are questions that are closed or give ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answers. Good questions are open-ended. Having open-ended questions like “tell me more about yourself” allow the people you’re communicating with to give better answers.
PERSUADING & NEGOTIATING: There is a huge section in the University of Kent’s website that covers persuading and negotiating, but in this lesson I will only focus on a section based on the book written by Professor Robert Cialdini, Influence: They Psychology of Persuasion. In this book, Cialdini talks about 6 laws or rules which govern how we influence and are influenced by others. These 6 laws include: scarcity, reciprocity, authority, social proof, commitment, and consistency.
MOTIVATING & SUPPORTING: As a leader, motivating and supporting those around you is important. A big part of motivating and supporting is giving praise.
GIVING & ACCEPTING CRITICISM: This is the idea of giving and receiving feedback. Mentioned in the research, is the importance of saying “sorry” in an assertive, not passive way. Go ahead and take the Assertiveness Quiz provided in their website. Also mentioned is what they call the “Praise Sandwich”, which means giving positive feedback, then critique, and finishing off again with positive feedback. Doing this will help the person you are communicating with receive the criticism much better.
PRESENTING: In the alumni course we have gone through presenting and presentation skills a lot, but I would encourage you to study from the University of Kent’s website on presentation because they go through much more detail. In fact, under “Presenting” they have another 8 categories dedicated to it. I would encourage you to study from their website to further enhance your presentation skills.
PHONE SKILLS: The phone skills they cover have to do more with interview settings over the phone. The skills you’ll learn from this section will help you, in general, with interviews but also with phone conferencing that many of you are a part of.
I encourage you to study the University of Kent website about effective communication skills in depth and practice. There is so much to learn about effective communication skills! To study from the website, go to http://www.kent.ac.uk/careers/sk/comm...
