If you've been working in Illustrator for a while, you’ve likely noticed that some repetitive tasks lack default keyboard shortcuts, slowing down your workflow. Luckily, you can create your own! Here are three of my favourite custom shortcuts that help me work more efficiently in Illustrator.
1. Trim Paths
This is a tool I use constantly during projects, and I've always wondered why it doesn’t have a built-in shortcut like it does in InDesign. Since the "W" key is already assigned to the Blend Tool, I’ve set up Option/Alt + W as the shortcut for Trim Paths.
2. Expand Tool
I frequently use the Expand Tool when illustrating, so assigning it a shortcut has been a huge time-saver. Little tweaks like this can make a big difference in the long run!
3. Centre Align to Artboard
This one is a game changer! I created an action to center-align objects to the artboard and assigned it to a single key. This saves me 2–3 clicks every time, which might not seem like much, but over the course of a project, it really adds up!
