👉 Kraken Automata: “Here be Monsters” is the title of this mechanized sculpture by Wanda Sowry- part of the Curious Contraptions exhibit at exploratorium. Turn a crank and the scene comes to life using simple mechanisms (such as cams, gears, and levers) to translate rotational motion to linear and oscillatory motions.
👉 Chaotic Coupled Rotors: kinetic energy is passed back and forth chaotically due to magnets mounted on the the ends of the spines that repel.
👉 CFL Color Change Glass: Special pigments in the glass selectively absorb some frequencies of light while transmitting others, very similar to the color change properties of the gemstone alexandrite.
👉 Jacob’s Ladder Magic: "disappearing coins" demonstrate non-intuitive aspect of the hinge mechanism of this classic toy.
👉 Jacob’s Ladder Image Flip: with a twist of the wrist this reproduction flips back and forth between an image of Queen Victoria and that of Prince Albert with a satisfying click-clack sound.
👉 Exothermic Crystallization Heat Pack: Solid sodium acetate melts at 137F (58C), but it will stay in liquid form as it cools to room temperature creating a supersaturated and supercooled state- the solution stays in the liquid form until a seed crystal, provided by clicking the metal disk, initiates the solidification.

👉 MaBoRun Mini: rolling marbles doing tricks as potential energy of gravity is converted to kinetic energy. In this mini-marble run a battery powered auger conveyor (Archimedes' Screw) brings the marbles back to the top and conservation of angular momentum produces a simulation of decaying orbits as the marbles whirl down the the main funnel shaped feature.
👉 Acrylic Refraction Art: “Block with Five Colors” by Vasa Mihich. Vasa’s art utilizes refraction, reflection, and color mixing to produce sculptures that dramatically change character depending on the angle from which they are viewed.
👉 The Levimoon: this detailed moon globe is an adjustable lamp that levitates! Charged through wireless induction via the base, the moon floats above the Earth, is illuminated from the inside to reveal the major features of the lunar surface, and will rotate when given a slight push. This kind of levitation uses a control system with an adjustable electromagnet in a feedback loop with Hall effect sensors which allows for fine tuning of the magnetic field to exactly balance the pull of gravity.
👉 Diffraction Spectrum Candle: a thin plastic diffraction grating surrounds the flame in this rainbow producing design. The rainbow spectrum is produced not by refraction like that of a prism, but instead by diffraction, where light waves deconstructively and constuctively interfere.
👉 Mirror Illusion Bank: Half an airplane, a mirror, and a symmetric image combine to make the "Art Bank".
👉 Sand Paperweight Toy: physics of granular materials- matter with unique properties between those of solids and liquids- as demonstrated with this simple toy.
