This is Dell Inspiron 1545 with an Intel Pentium Dual core T4300 @2.10Ghz, 3 GB of DDR2 RAM, 250 GB hard disk storage, and windows 7 HP 32 bit edition.
Symptoms:
Very long booting time, over 5 minutes from pressing start button till booting up into windows.
Slow opening of applications
Freezing and getting stuck
Fans can be heard revving loud
Laptop becomes hot with only a few minutes of use
One of the common repairs that people do is complete wipe and reload; i.e. reinstalling a new Operating system like Windows. Some laptops from companies like HP, Dell, Lenovo etc. also incorporate an easy restore to factory settings function, still this is not the subject of this tutorial. That new OS can solve quite a few issues if your problem was only software based, i.e. infection or corruption of important files. But if your problem was also, or predominantly hardware related then a wipe and reload would not help much.
Get yourself A Linux USB Installation disk, you can choose any flavour of linux according to your preference. I’m using a Linux mint 64 bit, if you are not sure use a 32 bit Live USB disk instead.
First, do a hard reset by unplugging the power, remove the battery, and press and hold the power button for at least 15 seconds. Leave the battery out and plug the charging cable back in. I would also recommend you find an Ethernet cable and plug that in as well, this is a best practice but not essential in most cases. I will also go one step further and take out the hard drive to prove a point of this tutorial. Now turn on the laptop. Look for the button to go into Bios, usually F2 on laptops, can also be buttons like delete, F10, etc., consult the manual for your particular make and model.
If there is a function to select boot order you can also do that, but I like to go into BIOS to retrieve as much info as I can of the laptop.
Select the USB hard drive as the first boot order, press F10 or esc or any other required function to save and exit. If done correctly the laptop should boot into the Linux USB disc. This is a fully functional Operating system with everything you need to operate the laptop for any normal daily usage.
And voila! With Linux mint you may have to activate the wireless driver. In the bottom corner type in device or driver manager, wait and select the driver for the wireless function. If there is no wireless driver, you can usually use the Ethernet cable to access the internet, if you didn’t plug in before then plug it now.
Now go into any website, I recommend somewhere where you can test video and audio like YouTube. Find your favourite Youtuber like this guy (HealMyPc), and test a video. If everything plays fine, you can go ahead and test other functionality, just play around with it, like check your email or do your shopping etc.
If everything works out fine, what this tells you is that everything apart from the hard disk, which we took out, is working nicely, so no issues with cpu, ram, graphics card, but more importantly the motherboard.
Now that you’ve narrowed down the issue to one component only, the next step is to diagnose between hardware issue with the drive or software issue, or both. If you want to see that repair tutorial, stay tuned for part 2 coming up.
