My beloved Guajira
Today we are celebrating one year since we met on that beach in the high Colombian Guajira. A beautiful natural place, but one that ironically witnessed your constant and solitary struggle to survive amidst waste, plastic and other garbage that human unconsciousness throws into the rivers and seas of this planet Earth. I must accept that at first it was not my intention to join you on my trip, even though I cried inconsolably for not accepting or understanding so much suffering and the bad state you were in. I wanted to give you water and food to calm your suffering even for a moment, but I knew that if I left you, you would not have much time left to live and my conscience and heart would never forgive me. The truth is I felt very scared and doubtful, because I had never in my life had the responsibility of taking care of a little animal, much less with my style of world traveler; I knew that making the decision to take you would change many things, but from that moment on, your gaze asked me to take you with me and I couldn't say no. So, since July 30th, you have been with me, a year of life at my side despite the initial diagnosis of your delicate state of health, with an osteosarcoma in your left femur and canine dirofilariasis (heartworm), having to keep you hospitalized for six days in the small animal clinic at the National University in Bogotá, until I thought about having to make the sad and hard decision to let you go to another world. But something changed from one day to the next, suddenly you improved and the happy call I was waiting for happened... "can you come for Guajirita" we will discharge you. The "miracle" happened😇 and the antibiotic treatment could continue.
Thanks to the veterinarians (earthly angels) of Riohacha, Santa Marta and Bogotá Colombia and of course to your will to live, we can celebrate that we have already traveled 25 thousand kilometers from the Alta Guajira Colombia to the end of the world in Ushuaia Argentina. Passing through 6 countries in South America and wanting to continue traveling until the universe allows it. I know that it was not your choice to be a traveling dog, I had to choose for you, I had no other option but to join me on my trip, but I am sure that it was worth it.
And although this is a dedication to honor your life, I want to take the opportunity to thank those animal defenders around the world, those who fight every day with and without a budget to protect from abuse, rescue from abandonment and enforce the rights of animals.
I also want to thank the little angels from the Chikopipo Company, who were interested in your story and wanted to tell it on their website in the hope that other people will be interested in helping these little animals that suffer so much on the streets. They also gave you some clothes for the cold and a nice blanket 🥰 for your trip.
That is why today I celebrate your life, I admire your courage for the many battles fought to survive in such difficult conditions, for your joy and desire to live, for the love and tenderness with which you wake me up every day and for many more reasons that make you unique and special to me.
What more can I ask for? I can only thank, thank and thank for having found you and being part of your story. Now I know that loving an animal is finding the true and purest unconditional love..
