Today, we've got a bittersweet update on the Web Captioner project. As you all know, Web Captioner, speech-to-text service used by OBS and other streaming tools got discontinued back in October 2023.
Relaunch Plans
I've had grand plans to revive and relaunch the service, but sometimes life has other plans for us. I've decided to shift my focus onto a new project that's been calling my name, and that means the Web Captioner relaunch has to take a back seat.
Web Speech API
But, hey, every cloud has a silver lining, right? During my deep dive into Web Captioner, I had the chance to explore the fantastic Web Speech API, which was the powerhouse behind the scenes. And guess what? It's mind-blowingly simple to use. I even tried it out on CodePen, and it only took around 10 lines of code. Check out this quick demo - https://codepen.io/lnjpblxf-the-reactor/pe...
Acknowledgement
I want to express my gratitude to Curt Grimes. Without his work and dedication to projects like Web Captioner, I wouldn't have stumbled upon the greatness of the Web Speech API. Curt, if you're watching this, thank you for your contribution to the developer community.
Future Projects
While the Web Captioner project won't be making a comeback under my wing, as I embark on this new adventure, I'm thrilled to apply what I've learned from Web Captioner to my upcoming projects. Stay tuned, because exciting things are on the horizon.
