There was very sad news to share with you. Eight monkeys were found dead on the 13th of October at Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens (HKZBG), and another died on the following day after displaying unusual behavior. Autopsies found the cause of deaths were melioidosis-induced sepsis. Another two monkeys were deceased over the weekends, adding the total number of deaths to 11 monkeys. The cause of the latest deaths is yet to be determined.
The deceased monkeys were one De Brazza's Monkey, three Common Squirrel Monkeys, three Cotton-top Tamarins and four White-faced Sakis. One De Brazza’s monkey that showed similar symptoms was placed in isolation and it is said to be stable now.
Melioidosis is transmitted through contact with contaminated soil and sewage. It isn’t transmitted from humans to humans or from animals to humans. According to the authority, there was digging during pipe-repair work in early October near their cages might have caused contaminated soil to be exposed to the environment. Staff wearing shoes with contaminated soil might have been brought into the cages. It could also be related to an infected monkey passing on the disease.
The authority believes this is an isolation case and the risk to public health is minimal. The Mammals Section of the zoo has been temporarily closed (October 14) until further notice for disinfection and cleaning works. The remaining sections are open to public.
⭐️The video was filmed on February and April 2024 at HKZBG.
