Pairing of Siamang Gibbons: Does he know how to?｜Great Call｜CHIBA ZOO｜フクロテナガザルのお見合い｜鳴き声｜千葉市動物公園
Filmed on October 3, 2024
The day I filmed was Chacha's 29th birthday. Brave usually lives with Heart at the monkey island. He was moved to the cage to be paired up with Chacha in July 2024. I visited the zoo on Chacha's 29th birthday, and was lucky enough to witness the pairing process. It's a long video, but contains lots of amazing moments exhibited by the two individuals. I will make a timestamp later for you to be able to jump to the clip you are interested in. I hope you enjoy watching it.
About Siamang
Symphalangus syndactylus
Habitat: The most widespread gorilla subspecies, and can be found across more than 700,000 km2 of central and West Africa.
Lifespan: 35 yrs in the wild (upto 60 yrs in captivity)
IUCN Red List : Critically Endangered
Habitat: in the mountains of the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra in rainforests and monsoon forests.
Lifespan: 35 - 40 years in captivity
IUCN Red List: Endangered
They are the largest among the gibbon family. Males have a longish tuft of hair in the genital region. Siamangs inflate their throat sac during vocalizations. When on the ground, siamangs are usually bipedal. In trees, they move easily through the branches using a form of swinging movement called brachiation.
Siamangs are famous for their long, loud duet call. The purpose of this call is to claim territory, communicate between pairs, and attract a breeding partner (Geissmann, 1999). The female makes the first call (the great call), and then the male starts singing (the coda), creating a duet that resonates throughout the forest. During the great call, the male makes a human-like sound, "Ahhh!"
CHACHA ♀

Sire: Kenbo
Dam: Charmy
Rearing: Parent

1999/12/31 Her mother died. After her passing, Chacha sang duets with her father Kenbo every day.
2013/12/07 Kenbo passed away and Chacha almost stopped singing.
2014/03/29 Itchi, a female siamang, was transferred to Yagiyama Zoo and joined Chacha as her companion. They were good friends and Chacha resumed singing again.
2019/01/21 Chacha was transferred to Chiba Zoo as part of a breeding loan program.
She has been paired with Brave several times, but things didn't work out well. Chacha has been kept solitary most of the period when she is in Chiba Zoo.
2024/07/03 The pairing with Brave has started again.

2019/04 As part of a breeding program, Chiba Zoo transferred Chacha. Pairing with Chacha has been tried out several times, but none went successful.
2024/07/03 Pairing with Chacha resumed again. They don't live together, but they spend some hours in a day when the timing is right.
HEART ♀

Rearing: ?
No offspring
1992/05/08 Heart was transferred to Chiba Zoo via an animal trading company.
1992/05/31 Brave was transferred to Chiba Zoo. They have been together since then. I'm not sure if their mating has been observed before.
2024/07/03 Pairing with Chacha resumed and Hear lives alone temporarily.
NB: The above birth information of Brave and Heart was referenced from GAIN. However, no data of such individuals born on the said date were found in the European studbook (2002). I wonder if he was born in the wild. The credibility of animals sourced via this animal trading company is questionable.
