What is Kolattam Dance?

Kolatam dance has originated from Mahabalipuram and Taripatri regions. Kolattam Dancers use their sticks to create harmonious music that accompanies their soothing and swift movements.
Kolatam dance has its origin in ancient times and it’s also mentioned in the epics and folklore of Kanchipuram as 'Cheivaikiyar Kolattam'.

Kolatam is a stick dance and a very popular dance in Andhra Pradesh. Kolatam dance form was originated in the Seventh century. In #Andhra Pradesh, this dance is called as #KolKollannalu, Kolattam and #Kolannalu. In the early days, the dance was performed by women only, gradually the changes occurred in Kolatam dance and now the dance was performed by both males and females. Generally, this art form is performed during village festivals. Kolatam dance is a combination of rhythmic movements, songs, and music.

Style of the Kolattam Dance:
Kolatam dance consists of different dancing movements. Body tilting, footsteps and other body movements are essential to the dancer during the dance performance. When the song started as soon as the artists start to dance by following the vocal and music sounds. Every song of the Kolatam includes starting called as Ethugadu, then the speed of the dance change called as Usi and the ending called Muktayimpu.

Mostly the kolatam dance starts with the chant of Lord Ganesha. In this dance, the artists wear very simple clothes. The men wear the anklet bells, dhoti, kerchief over the neck and white color shirt. Women wear common saris mostly in yellow in color with red borders. During the dance performance, the musicians use the musical instruments. They are Mridangam, Harmonium and few times Clarinet.
