IMPORTANT: Some students are alerting me that I made a mistake in saying that in PROPHASE the DNA is at its maximum level of condensation, and that this only occurs in METAPHASE. This was an editing error. What I meant, but wasn't clear due to editing cuts, is that during MITOSIS, chromosomes represent DNA at its maximum level of condensation. In other words, I was saying that chromosomes already exist in PROPHASE, which are more condensed DNA compared to the DNA in interphase. I didn't intend to make a comparison between the level of chromosome condensation at each stage of mitosis. In any case, it is in ANAPHASE that chromosomes are at their maximum level of condensation, not in METAPHASE. See some links below that show that it is in ANAPHASE that DNA is at its maximum condensation in mitosis.
