Taxonomy deals with the description, identification, and classification of organisms. The classification of living organisms is ancient, however, we consider modern biological classification to begin with Carl von Linné (Carl Linnaeus). Linnaeus was a Swedish physician and naturalist who formulated taxonomy, positioning all known organisms of his time in hierarchical levels (Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species). Linnaeus did not coin all these levels, but he laid the groundwork for almost all of them. He also formulated binomial nomenclature, in which every described species must have its scientific name presented in binomial form (two names); one that defines the genus and the other, called the specific epithet, which provides information about the specific species. A species can only be written using both names together. Examples: Homo sapiens, Canis familiaris, Enyalius bilineatus.
