Wash your pillow sheets and towels regularly.
Your face houses millions of bacteria that then attach to your pillow, every night you slap your face on it.
In most cases acne involves an overproduction of sebum or skin oils with inflammation. If you put your head on your pillow, all of this, with those bacteria are going to be brewing all day waiting for you to come back and smear some more.
Stop touching your face
Studies have shown that most people are touching their face between 16-23 times per hour. Either consciously or subconsciously it doesn’t matter. It’s a habit to stop.
Your hands touch many surfaces during the day. Your phone, laptops, door handles, taps.
Touching your face spreads different germs around that will further aggravate your acne, especially if your skin is dry or there’s open sores.
Don’t over-wash
It may seem like a stark contradiction that we need oil on our skin when oil is attributed to acne, but trust me.
Oil helps to trap the moisture in our skin so it doesn’t dry out.
Dry skin has been shown to increase the risk of pre-mature ageing over the long term; lead to chronic inflammation if combined with acne, delay wound healing,, lead to scar tissue forming.
Depending on your skin type, washing with a gentle cleanser once or twice daily is more than enough to remove the excess sebum and dead skin cells.
In fact this point is especially important if you take acne medication, as they will naturally dry your skin out even more.
Wash yourself after exercising
Excessive sweating has been linked to an increased risk of acne, largely from the moisture and oils generated and sitting on the skin, that over time lead to increased levels of bacteria.
Generally, if you can wash yourself an hour or so after finishing any exercise, or any time where you are sweating excessively, it will help to reduce the risk of acne.
Don’t wear super tight clothing
Most people don’t realise this but if you wear tight clothing that hugs and rubs on your skin, the friction it causes can actually damage the skin underneath.
Most of the time this clothing is usually gym-wear, so now we can add in increased sweat production.
This usually leads to acne in areas such as your mid and upper back, and buttock.
This same principle can also be applied to people who wear glasses or sunglasses regular, make sure to wash those too.
Don’t pop your pimples! Ever
As much as people for whatever reason find a guilty pleasure in popping their blackheads and pimples, I strongly recommend you don’t.
Popping pimples releases all of the pus, dead skin cells, sebum and likely bacteria involved in the infection, onto your skin where it can then transmit and spread around to other pores and cause more infections.
It also promotes more inflammation and greatly increases the likelihood of scar tissue forming.
Choosing the acne medication
If you’ve been trying a treatment and it hasn’t shown any improvements over a couple of months it may be worthwhile considering alternatives.
Speaking to your medical professional is a great way to get assessed and find the right treatment for you.
Pro tip if you’re using benzyl peroxide, most evidence shows that there is no added benefit of using 10% benzyl peroxide over the 5%, but it does increase your likelihood of side effects. So maybe just stick to the 5% or lower.
Don’t forget about your hair
Your hair like your skin can build up with many different germs and oils and dandruff and oily hair products, and depending on the length of it, it can contribute to acne.
Use a moisturiser
Again, I mentioned the benefits of using a moisturiser in my last video as well as the downsides of dry skin in this one.
Its more than just using a moisturiser though, which you should be using one to four times a day or as recommended if your skin is really dry, but you need to choose the right one for your skin type.
Stay hydrated
Hydration is an important factor for everything, and our skin is no exception.
It’s a simple one to follow and you won’t find any evidence about getting rid of acne, that would include this one.
Remove make-up before bed.
Make up unfortunately will block your pores, especially if it’s that really heavy, cakey style make-up that some people like to apply.
If you do like to wear make-up regularly, or if for whatever reason you have a apply a lot for a certain event.
