Lucerne is a high protein leguminous plant that fixes atmospheric nitrogen for release to subsequent crops. Lucerne thrives on well–drained soil with good levels of lime, potash and phosphate. It has a deep tap root allowing it to yield well even in drought conditions. Lucerne is usually grown for baled or clamped silage but can also be grazed or cut for hay.
