Geography deals with the spatial structure, spatial and socio-spatial processes, and development of the Earth's surface. It considers the physical characteristics of landscapes, human societies and their material and socio-cultural environments, as well as their interrelationships and developments in different regions. A key focus of modern geography and geographical education at the University of Cologne is the analysis and evaluation of human-environment relationships, particularly within the context of sustainable development. Geography thus acts as a bridge between the natural and social sciences, enabling the discipline to comprehensively examine complex global issues.
