Lacquer based friction polish? Let's make it! | Read the description please!
Shellac based friction polish is the go-to of wood/pen turning if you aren't using a CA finish. But there are ways unseen on YouTube only heard from the depths of forums and other places where the old school woodworkers chat, that have used a lacquer as a base instead. So I'm going to replace shellac with lacquer, and denatured alcohol with lacquer thinner, keep the linseed oil, and see what happens!
The pros being, it can produce a higher shine, and can be made just as easily as a shellac version, with a "slightly" longer shelf life. The cons are really just, it stinks and you should have ventilation.
As they are essentially the same kind of finish (one from a bug and one from a tree), I'm going to see what happens if we make a batch! Then I'll test it in the upcoming video making a set of Celtic Twist Pens for a wedding gift!
If you want to try this, I used a 1:1:1 ratio of clear lacquer, lacquer thinner, and boiled linseed oil. There may be better combinations. But you'll have to search or test for that yourself.
