Expand for more information⬇Materialism assumes that consciousness is derived from matter, but consciousness is necessary for matter to exist in the first place—that is, it is fundamental. In our culture's worldview, reality is external to the mind, so we can all view the same reality from different perspectives. However, there is no external, objective world outside the mind. Reality is ultimately just a conscious experience. There are no such things as objective structures in a reality external to the mind; instead, it's all in the mind, and thus the mind is not in the brain, but the brain is in the mind. The brain's function is to localize consciousness, fixing it in a specific position and spatiotemporal perspective of the physical body. In doing so, the brain modulates conscious perception, meaning that no subjective experience is created by the brain, but merely selected by it. Personal psyches are merely locations or alterations of the mind in general, so, at their core, our psyches are fundamentally one and the same mind. Your body is simply the image of a particular state of consciousness you experience when you are alive. Consciousness is what creates the body through imagination, through projections of your true self. When many minds contribute to a collective dream, the dreamed images acquire a special kind of "impulse" associated with their sharing among minds, and they seem to take on a life of their own, independent of any individual mind. This impulse prevents sudden discontinuities from arising in the dreamscape, and this may actually explain why the "breathing" of things into and out of existence only happens at the quantum level and not at the macroscopic level.
