The druids used mistletoe in the winter solstice ceremonial known as Yule. It was a symbol of fertility within Celtic tradition. In the Norse and Saxon belief systems mistletoe was the tears of Frigga or Freya the goddess of love.
The tradition of kissing beneath mistletoe started in Greece and its association with love and fertility is a constant theme throughout European tradition.
