Pixar began as the Graphics Group, a computer graphics division of Lucasfilm, which was founded in 1979 by Edwin Catmull and Alvy Ray Smith. In 1986, Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple Inc., acquired the division from Lucasfilm and renamed it Pixar. The company then went on to produce a number of highly successful animated films, including Toy Story, Monsters Inc., and The Incredibles, and was eventually acquired by The Walt Disney Company in 2006.
