Our culture: Educator Amber Washington created more than a space for Black students
Last November, educator Amber Washington – and her students – won $25,000 during the EduTank Pitch Event at the annual Amplify conference, hosted by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and the Amplify Community Advisory Committee. With a $10,000 DonorsChoose gift card and a $15,000 grant from the Foundation, they build a “Culture House” led by the Black Student Union (BSU) at North Kansas City High School. The BSU Culture House is a hub where students can get needed school supplies, college-prep support, and connect with Black professions in the community.
“It just makes me so happy,” Washington said. “I think I reflect back mostly to my own childhood and all the educators and positive role models I had. I feel like I'm just duplicating what they did to me, and it just makes me want to keep giving back and doing more.”
