Jeep XJ Power Locks Won't Lock? This 10-Second Screwdriver Hack FIXED Mine!
My Jeep Cherokee XJ's power door locks suddenly quit locking—they'd unlock perfectly with the key fob, driver's switch, or passenger switch, but nothing on the lock side! Classic XJ headache 😤
After popping the passenger door panel and some quick testing, I found the culprit: the two black relay modules (visible in the video) built right into the passenger-side door lock/window switch assembly. This is a VERY common failure on XJs (especially '97-01 models)—the lock relay gets weak, stuck, or fails while the unlock relay keeps chugging along. You can often hear the relay click, but no action on the locks.
For a super quick temporary hack, I gently tapped the faulty relay (with a screwdriver handle) while hitting the lock button—and it fired right up! Got me locking/unlocking again instantly. Not a forever fix (relays can die completely or have bad solder joints), but it saved the day without tools or parts hunting.
I've ordered replacement relays (cheap on eBay/Amazon—search "XJ door lock relay" or the full passenger switch module from Switch Doctor or similar if you want plug-and-play). If this video helps folks, I'll do a full relay swap/soldering or module replacement follow-up soon.
