Measles Epidemic Spreads Across Sindh, Claims 17 Lives in Two Months
Karachi – A measles outbreak has gripped Sindh, including Karachi, with alarming numbers of infections and fatalities reported in the first two months of the year. According to data from the Sindh Health Department, over 1,100 children contracted measles in January and February, while 17 lost their lives due to complications arising from the disease.
Major hospitals in Karachi continue to receive 5 to 10 new measles cases daily, raising concerns among health professionals. Doctors attribute the rapid spread of the epidemic to low vaccination rates among children, as many parents fail to immunize their children against the highly contagious virus.
Karachi alone accounted for 550 measles cases during this period. Meanwhile, 10 children in Khairpur, 5 in Kemari, and one each in Sukkur and Jacobabad succumbed to the disease.
Health experts emphasize that timely vaccination is crucial in preventing such outbreaks. They urge parents to ensure their children receive routine immunizations to curb the spread of measles and protect vulnerable lives.
Authorities have called for intensified vaccination campaigns and awareness programs to tackle the crisis and prevent further loss of life.
